January 21st, 2008

(SURREY) Member of Parliament Sukh Dhaliwal congratulated organizers for their continuing work to create a gate for the Punjabi Market and affirmed the pledge that a Liberal government would erect an India Gate in both South Vancouver and Surrey to would celebrate the community’s rich and unique history.

“I am pleased to learn that work on a design is underway and that the organizers have met with Premier Campbell and other provincial officials to discuss this exciting idea,” Dhaliwal said. “Historically, this is the first Punjabi Market and it embodies the community’s roots here in British Columbia. A gate for the Market would recognize the contributions of the South Asian community to our province and to Canada.”

The Punjabi Market Gate will reflect the history of Punjabi people in British Columbia. It will also be an attraction for tourists from all over the world.

“The Liberal Party of Canada was voicing its support for both a Vancouver and a Surrey Punjabi Market Gate almost a year ago. We were there at the start and we will be there until the end. I am proud to affirm our commitment and pledge to do all we can to bring key stakeholders to the table to make this happen,” Dhaliwal said.

Dhaliwal hopes the Surrey Gate will be part of a larger effort to revitalize north Scott Road, including the Heritage Rail Society’s proposal for a community rail station in the area.

Sukh Dhaliwal is the Member of Parliament for Newton - North Delta and the Opposition Critic for Competitiveness and the New Economy.
