Newton-North Delta MP Sukh Dhaliwal appointed to the critic’s role for Competitiveness and the New Economy

October 8th, 2007

For Immediate Release

(OTTAWA) - Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal is pleased to announce that he has taken on the critic’s role for Competitiveness and the New Economy in the federal Liberal caucus for the Official Leader of the Opposition, effective immediately.

Said Dhaliwal, earlier today, “Following the work that I have been doing as Critic for Western Economic Diversification, this is a great vote of confidence from the leader in the skills and the dedication I have brought to my role. This is a portfolio that touches upon the crucial issues our communities are facing as we adapt and capitalize on the wide range of opportunities open to enterprise across the country. It also directly addresses our growing rural and urban divide, the settlement and integration of skilled workers and professionals from around the world and the urgent concerns of our manufacturing sector in this new era of parity.”

Mr. Dion announced his shuffle of critic’s roles, along with the Chairs of Caucus Committees, as Members of Parliament prepare for their return to Ottawa when Parliament reconvenes next week. He spoke of a renewed and reinvigorated focus on addressing the priorities of all Canadians, holding Prime Minister Harper to account on the major failings of his government.

“As I said when first elected in January of last year, the Canadian people have not given Mr. Harper a blank cheque,” Dhaliwal added. “As someone who comes from a small business background, I can tell you we can’t let this country stand still. A dynamic economy requires a progressive agenda, and I will be vigilant in promoting and defending it for my constituents and for all Canadians in this new role.”
