For Immediate Release

Surrey - Members of the Liberal Task Force on Communities-at-Risk met today with a number of community representatives in the Lower Mainland to examine the implementation of a new fund that will help preserve the safety of ethno-cultural at-risk communities across Canada.

“These consultations provide an opportunity for schools, places of worship and community centers who have been the targets of hate-crimes to share their experience. The protective measures that many have had to take makes it very clear that the federal government needs to be doing more to help keep them safe, ” said Task Force Chair Mrs. Susan Kadis, MP for Thornhill.

“These consultations will allow us to determine the best way to implement our Leader’s commitment to establishing a Security Fund to assist these communities in offsetting the additional costs of security,” stated Senator Mobina Jaffer, Vice-Chair of the Task Force.

The task force will be holding consultations with community groups in Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal, Halifax and Edmonton in the weeks ahead.

“The federal government has to provide leadership,” MP Dhaliwal said, “it has to send out the message that the Canada of the Charter of Rights of Freedoms, 25 years young, is stronger than ever. And that Canada stands firm on hate crimes and all forms of intolerance.”

“I support and applaud the Task Force for holding these meetings which allows us to share our stories and for involving us in the development of a program that responds to our needs,” declared Ms. Saira Khan of the Newton Advocacy Group Society.

Members of the task force include:
• Sukh Dhaliwal (Newton-North Delta)
• Anita Neville (Winnipeg South Centre)
• Raymonde Folco (Laval-Les Îles)
• Yasmin Ratansi (Don Valley East)
• Michael Savage (Dartmouth-Cole Harbour)
• Senator Yoine Goldstein (Rigaud)
