Sukh Dhaliwal tables petition on South Fraser Perimeter Road Development

For Immediate Release

(OTTAWA) Sukh Dhaliwal, Liberal Member of Parliament for Newton-North Delta, tabled a petition in the House of Commons today, calling for a halt to current plans for development along the South Fraser Perimeter Road.

“The simple fact of the matter is that realistic options have not been considered here, Dhaliwal said. “And by realistic I mean options that promote environmental sustainability and do as little harm as possible to the surrounding neighbourhoods.”

The text of the petition calls on the government to “provide the economic support to ensure that environmentally and socially sustainable options are considered.” Dhaliwal, after extensive consultations with local residents, has serious concerns about the air and water quality, as well as the encroachment on Burns Bog and the fragile ecosystem it supports. Over 400 residents signed on to the petition for a fulsome review of development plans under the Pacific Gateway Infrastructure fund.

“The decisions we make now will not only affect local residents today but the future generations that come to live in this community,” Dhaliwal said. “That is why I feel it is very important to table this petition, and affix my signature as a show of support.”
