Statement by MP Sukh Dhaliwal on the upcoming 93rd anniversary of the arrival of the Komagata Maru

May 17th, 2007

For Immediate Release

“May 23rd will mark the 93rd Anniversary of the arrival of the Komagata Maru, in British Columbia carrying 376 South Asian immigrants to our shores only to be turned away and denied the right of landing, resulting in the loss of many innocent lives.

I would like to recognize the tremendous work Mr. Sahib Thind and the Professor Mohan Singh Memorial Foundation of Canada for their dedication in promoting education and recognition of the victims of this incident as well as those Canadians who have worked so hard to bring this issue to national attention.

Mr. Speaker, this was truly a Canadian tragedy and I call upon this government to formally acknowledge this with an apology.

Thank you, Mr. Speaker.”
