Newton-North Delta MP Sukh Dhaliwal on hand for Surrey’s ‘giant step forward’ in crime reduction
February 26th, 2007For Immediate Release
(SURREY) - Newton-North Delta MP Sukh Dhaliwal was proud to be one of the local elected representatives in attendance at the launch of the city of Surrey’s Crime Reduction Strategy today, where Mayor Diane Watts outlined its recommendations and steps forward for the future.
“What I am pleased to see here is the acknowledgement of the tremendous work our local RCMP officers are doing on the front lines,” Dhaliwal said, “while at the same time recommending that there is more we can do to make their jobs easier on a variety of fronts.”
The crime reduction strategy, outlined in a 48 page paper entitled as “a problem solving approach,” is an innovative, multifaceted plan focused on four primary objectives: to reduce crime and increase community safety; to increase public involvement and reduce crime; to increase integration between all stakeholders and to improve public awareness around the reality and perception of crime.
“What I hope to be involved in is a more fulsome dialogue between the municipal, provincial and federal governments as to how we can better co-ordinate social programs, so that many of the root causes of crime are addressed,” Dhaliwal said. “And at the same time, as a Member of Parliament I want to make sure our local RCMP have the resources to do their job effectively. Because the future of our community, our children’s future, depends on it.”
