MP Sukh Dhaliwal tables private members bill to promote lingustic and cultural diversity by officially declaring February 21st international mother language day in Canada
February 21st, 2007For Immediate Release
Members Bill entitled the International Mother Language Day Act.
“This new Act is designed to promote respect for languages, including sign language, throughout Canada by officially observing ‘International Mother Language Day’ every February 21. This will be a day for the people of Canada to celebrate their linguistic and cultural diversity in our great country. Canada is well known throughout the world for its respect and promotion of multiculturalism and this is one of the reasons why so many people, including me, have chosen to make Canada their home,” said Dhaliwal.
The International Mother Language Day Act acknowledges the contribution language makes to a diverse and multicultural society like Canada. It will create an opportunity for the Government of Canada to take the lead in launching initiatives to promote tolerance, dialogue and dignity. Many of the 6500 languages in this world are dying with the passing of the last generation to speak them. At the General Conference of the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) it was unanimously agreed to observe International Mother Language Day on February 21 in each and every year. It is imperative that Canada take the lead in officially observing this day as well.
“This is not just about those who have come to Canada relatively recently and value their mother language as a part of their identity. There are 104 indigenous languages spoken in Canada with 28 in serious danger of disappearing. It is vital that we celebrate the contribution of those languages that are an essential part of Canada’s living history.
I sincerely hope that all Members of Parliament will come together in supporting this international initiative to celebrate our shared heritage,” concluded Dhaliwal.
